Guided Math (Math Workshop) Overview
This year, math is taught in a "Math Workshop" style approach. What this means is that for every chapter, students are pre-tested on the skills presented in that chapter and placed into skill level groups based upon their prior knowledge of those skills. Students are then taught as a whole group in a 10 minute "mini-lesson." Following the mini lesson are 4 center activities that are differentiated to meet your child's individual needs: Math Facts, At Your Seat, Teacher Time, Hands On.
One of the centers students are given the opportunity to work in is the Math Facts center. In this center, students practice addition and subtraction fluency in a variety of ways. Laptops are used in the classroom for interactive online practice using programs such as Reflex Math, iXL, and Freckle. Other times, students work in their small group to play a fact fluency game with their friends.
In 3rd grade, the fluency focus is on multiplication. We will be spending a good bulk of the year learning and practicing multiplication fluency strategies and memorization .
